The drivers of the Porsche Sprint Trophy Benelux have barely completed the debriefing of the first meeting of the season, but they can already head towards Zandvoort. The beautiful dune circuit on the North Sea is a real challenge for any driver, and the changes made before the arrival of F1 only make the route even more interesting. As part of the traditional Pinkster races, three races are scheduled: two 30-minute sprints (Saturday at 2:50 PM and Sunday at 11:45 AM) and a 55-minute Long Race (Sunday at 2:40 PM)
John de Wilde (Speedlover) won two of the three races in Zolder and starts the second meeting of the season as the favorite. However, the championship leader is well aware that the competition is looking for revenge, and that is certainly the case for his teammate Gilles Smits. On the Limburg circuit he managed to conquer one of the two pole positions and he also won the first race. Moreover, the man from Wavre made quite an impression in Zandvoort last year. He will therefore have to be taken into account in the battle for victory, especially since he is determined to score heavily this time after a collision in Zolder. In the provisional standings, the two title favorites are separated by Wim Meulders. He will once again share his # 3 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup type 991 with Rik Renmans, in the
Porsche Sprint Trophy Benelux a useful option to reduce costs.
Régis Gosselin, working in Zolder with the August Racing car, will not be present this time. However, he cherishes the ambition to start again at the next meeting, in Spa-Francorchamps. In the meantime, we will get some other podium candidates in Zandvoort, in the form of Jean-Pierre and Jaxon Verhoeven (Speedlover). Father and son Verhoeven are making their comeback in the peloton where they were among the trendsetters in 2020. Jos Jansen, with a car deployed by his own team JJ Racing, also hopes to be able to get involved in the battle at the front.
Niels Troost (Team GP Elite), the current leader of the Rookies, is driving a home race in Zandvoort. They are very much looking forward to the duel that he will fight with his fellow countryman Lucas van Eijndhoven (JW Raceservice). Let us remind you that both drivers in Zolder shared the victories in the Sprintraces neatly with each other.
Unfortunately, by exceptional exception, no participants in the Clubsport Division will appear at the start in Zandvoort. “An unfortunate combination of circumstances,” says Olivier Aerts, Series Manager of the Porsche Sprint Trophy Benelux. “This category is ideal for young riders and rookies, but this weekend one is competing in an international karting competition, another is active in the Monaco Grand Prix and for some other riders, the move is made more difficult by the ongoing corona crisis. However, we will remain in close contact with all drivers and teams and expect that several Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport will again be at the start in Spa-Francorchamps in early July.
